Alternate Garmin Training Software
I use SportTracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/) [no affiliation]. It's free. It seemed a bit clumsy at first but it does everything I need.
I use sporttracks as well and it works fine and does everything that I am looking for, it is also free so you can give it a shot with no obligation.
The free level of motionbased works great for me -- the things you "don't get" really aren't important to me. Althought MB is going away "soon" and a new Garmin Connect site will be replacing it. I will be interested to see how that is.

I'd be interested to find out what the alternative one for Mac is... Training Center for Mac sucks.
I traded up to WKO+ and have not regretted it. It does many things very well that I couldn't get done in other packages.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
I use WKO+ for my PowerTap but you can't just directly upload from a Garmin I don't believe -- doing so missed a bunch of the distance and you need some correction. I never read the details since it seemed like too much work. What do you need to do?

You can directly upload from both. One of the issues with the Forerunner is that its set to "smart record" data, which doesn't pick up data every second or few seconds like the PT is set when you get it. You can change the setting on the FR to record every second. Once that's done, its pretty much the same.
I upload from both constantly. The thing I have gotten done yet is accurately combing data tracks. I use the training workouts extensively in the FR so I often end up with both the PT and FR tracks. I've only managed to get the altitude track from the FR onto the PT track once. There's a weird data combo problem.
One of the good parts of uploading from both is that the TSSB measures and what not from WKO+ are a little more meaningful with both sets of data.

My Forerunner is the 301, so it is set to record every second. It still didn't directly upload successfully (still = when I last tried). Looks like it isn't supported at that device (http://wiki.peaksware.com/wiki/index.php/Garmin) -- what a pain in the butt.

Bah.
Mine's a 305. But I'm still slightly confused on the point - in my version of WKO+ it does show it as an option to import from the 301... but it does seem from the help page that you have to import from TC. Bah on that for sure.
Without a 301 around to test, I can't do too much to test and see if I can help otherwise. Maybe someone else with a 301 has gotten it to work?

I did email them at one point and got an answer I didn't like and quit using it (but never really did all the details, and can't find the message any more). Sooo... I'm gonna say that it is just how it works. Maybe I'll get Mike to replace the drowned 301 with a model that would work with WKO ;)

If you *need* a reason to upgrade to a FR 305... I think that is an excellent need to fulfill... ;) Given how inexpensive they are now, its especially true.
I will say I really like being able to D/L both my running and biking together into WKO. I started inputting my swimming manually as well, but the program's bias is biking first, running second, and swimming is a distant third, so its not so friendly for swimming stuff yet.
But otherwise, I do think WKO+ is a solid analysis replacement for Training Center. I do use both though, as I do a lot of programming of workouts into the FR through TC. So I use TC as a backup of the data, and to do programming and use WKO+ for analysis.
I've really gotten into the Training Stress concept and have found that a quantitative measure of Training stress helps me push myself. I may be tired, but if my TS doesn't suggest that I need to rest, I'll push it (within bounds, of course). I helps me not wuss out on days when I just didn't feel into it...

My hard drive crashed, so I'm getting ready to setup Garmin Training Center again. Is there anything else out there that's better? I read a post on other software that someone suggested, but it was for a MAC. I know MotionBased is available, but I'd rather buy new software for $50, then pay $10/month for a MotionBased account.
