Sleep... Wonderful, Amazing, Restful Sleep
On average, I get between 7-8 hours a night. I try to incorporate little cat naps but those are few and far between. There was a recent study that showed that athletes who get 10 hours of sleep performed better than athletes who got less. No surprise there but I find it hard to get 10 hours of sleep and still pay my mortgage.

Also in the 7-8 range. I try to be in bed at 9 or 930 and I get up at 530 on week days and 630 on weekends. On the weekends I try to take naps during the day... anywhere from 30mins to 3 hours.
Some days I can swing more sleep but usually it is between 6-7 hours a night. When I am well rested I feel better ans feel I perform better, but life happens and sometimes there insn't enought time to fit everything in without some compromise.

I'd love to get 8 hours or more of sleep per night but throw in work, commutes, family commitments and then trying to train and I end up with 6 hours on average. It results in lots of coffee breaks but I don't see any other way to keep the above noted priorities. By Thurs and Friday that commute home is tough however. Weekends = naps.
7-8 hours, anything less effects me. I also try to get a cat nap in, but those last 30-60 mins and are too far and few between. Can we get more hours in a day and possible another day in the week?

I'm usually in the 6-6.5 range, which is a huge improvement from the 5 I got in college so I usually feel well rested...although your timing of this question is horrible. I was up late helping my fiance finish her finals paper/presentation and got about 5 hours (including oversleeping my alarms) and was unable to make coffee before leaving for work...thanks for reminding me what I missed out on. I didn't realize once I got used to getting more sleep...it'd be near impossible to scale it down again at all
I try to get 8 hours per night, but we have a new baby coming in a few weeks, so I'm assuming I won't be able to keep that up. I think I'm just trying to prepare myself for the lack of sleep by getting a full 8 hours now. Maybe I'm just fooling myself.

I am not married, do not have children, and I basically work 9-5 and even I don't manage to get 8 hours of sleep every night, so I can't imagine most of the other trifuelers do either! It's pretty unbelieveable that you guys who work more than I do and have families manage to train as hard as you do. It's impressive.
I am in good shape if I get 7 hours. 6 is doable. Anything less than 6 and something's gotta give...I'm either worthless at the office after lunch or end up sleeping through my morning workout the next day.
On weekends I usually nap for a couple of hours after a long workout (e.g. 60+ mile ride, 12+ mile run).
Also in the 7-8 range. I try to be in bed at 9 or 930 and I get up at 530 on week days and 630 on weekends. On the weekends I try to take naps during the day... anywhere from 30mins to 3 hours.
Same here. Nothing better than a weekender 100k bike, a few beers, cold shower, and long nap.

Correct!
(congrats, by the way)
Congrats ChunkyB! I've already told my brother that as soon as my niece is walking, I'll be right behind her with a baby sized pair of Nikes and some gatorade!

HAHA. That's awesome. I can just see you: "Water or Gatorade? Water or Gatorade?". Thanks all for the congratulations.

Exactly.... my weekend mornings are ALWAYS the same: get up, eat lightly, ride/run, go to the same coffee shop every Sat/Sun for breakfast, go home and go back to sleep by 11 or noon (except in July during the TdF).
I forgot to mention I am also not married, no kids, no dogs, and have a triathlete room mate, and do ALL my training by riding and running out my front door; except the pool, which is on the way home from the office. So I don't have to spend time loading my bike...ever, etc. I work from 7-4 most days.
I typically get 8 and 7 on only a few days a week. Sleep is really important to me so I make it a priority. I am not the kind of person who can run on only 5-6 hours.
Every minute of my day is planned so it's efficient and productive so that I can get to bed by 9pm if I'm waking at 5am the next day to workout before work.
During my lunch at work I'll actually take a nap in my car and set my travel alarm to give me a bonus 30-45min. Sometimes I'm a little confused when I wake up, but it's nice to fall asleep.
"Whether you think you can or can't, you're right"
I'm like most others, 7-8 hours of sleep. I'm married but luckily my wife goes to bed early also. I can go off of a lot less but my workouts definitely suffer. I try not to go over 8 hours on the weekend just to keep a steady sleep routine. The hardest part for me is getting up early on Sat/Sun b/c I end up waking the dogs up, which in turn wakes my wife up. So she's always trying to convince me to stay in bed so she can keep sleeping.
I get between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Usually 7 on the weekdays and 9 on the weekends.
7-8 hrs for me too, it's hard to get to bed by 9, but I try to get the kids to sleep by 8, then have "quality time" with my husband, and off to bed I go, then wake up around 4:30. I get a good nap on Saturday and then I can stay up "late" Sat. night (that's 10- 10:30).
Congrats, ChunkyB- start building the aerotryke!
I generally get 6-7. I would feel much better if I could get 8 every night, but it just doesn't happen as often as I would like. Usually catch up on a few more hours during the weekend.
+1 ChunkyB and the Aerotryke II. The only question is what race to debut it at.

I'm thinking TdF 2015.

I can just picture it. The countdown...and then chunky rolling down the start ramp.

I don't know what's a funnier thought, the image of chunky rolling down on the aerotryke mark II, or his actually being really good at it and FLYING past the competition... Vrrrrrmmmm!!!!

HAHA. I can picture it now. Like when Lance passed Ivan Basso on that time trial up Alpe D'Huez in 2004 (I was just watching "Overcoming" the other night). That'll be me flying up the mountains. They won't know what hit em.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Yes, You are fooling yourself. I thought I would confirm that.
My daughters are almost 10 and 7 and I have not gotten enough sleep since they have been born.
However, you will love every minute of being a Dad.

Now explain to me what this 'nap' thing is. It sounds good.
I am lucky if I can squeeze in a short nap maybe a couple of times a year.

A lot of bartering/bargaining with the hubby gets me good naps time (he's happy, I'm happy, it's good to be in my house on those days:)
I function on 7-8, but I prefer 10. I nap on the weekends too. It all depends on work and travel - and the amount of daylight. I'm sure fellow northerners can agree, it's hard to close up shop when the sun is still out. I find myself out running at 9.30, or playing with the horses and forget what time it is.
Chunky B, they won't know what hit them? I think the pink cape will give you away! Who's starting the fan club? Count me in.
Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left
7-8. Usually in bed by 10:00 and up at 5:00 to get hubbys breakfast and lunch made (ok group awwwwww) ..yes I do that. I do have the option of a mid afternoon nap if needed since I don't work once the training hours get up there--am around 17 now (including yoga), before this week taper for my race Saturday.
I work mon, tues, thurs, fri, sat, from 5am-2pm, so i usually get 6-7 hours those nights+45 min every day at lunch on the weekends i usually get 8 with a 1-2 hour nap at some point during the day
I'm in the 6-7 hour camp. 2 kids, training, very long hours with work. It takes its toll and I get wiped out after a few weeks of it. I sometimes get to nap on the trains too and from work. I don't recommend it much - I need more than I get and it does effect my training and my general state of feeling.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

You'll be feeling it at the the NYC tri next month with the 6am start.
See ya there!!

This sums up my schedule minus the nap on the weekends. I get up by 5:00 am on the weekends too in order to get the long stuff in and still have the rest of the day to do family stuff.

yep, 5 am on weekend too, b/c if I am not showered, dressed and ready for parties, playdates and other fun stuff by 9:30 I feel like a loser mom
I can't sleep more then 7 hours a night, I wake up. No kids, not married... just have never slept much my entire life.
I must be the abnormal one of the group. Married, one kid, work, commute etc etc, but I go to bed when my kid goes to bed @ 8-8:30 and rise at 6:00am. Swim three times a week after 6, go to work, use my extended lunch hour (or two) to get my workouts in and use Friday afternoons to do my long rides.
Must confess my commute is 15 minutes, 2 minutes to the pool and my boss is more dedicated to tri's than I am. LOL.
NAF Wanna trade? :) Sounds awesome.
Beads - sadly, that's still normal rising time - the 7 month old gets up around 5:15-5:30 everyday... I'm staying in the city night before the race, near the start :) See you there, but I refuse to draft you at all after what happened to you last year...
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
Does anyone get restless leg syndrome from training? I'm usually ok unless I do hill repeats or track/time trials in the evening. Then my legs wake me up twitching. Melatonin(sp?) and Magnesium/Calcium will sometimes prevent it but not always.

I seriously doubt that is restless leg syndrome... would you even know what that is if it weren't for the big pharm companies advertising it on TV to sell you drugs?
I think leg twitching/cramping is somewhat normal after really hard workouts. I can remember being woken up by leg cramps as far back as high school, and as recently as 2 weeks ago.
I get about 7.5 hours of sleep a night (9:30-5). I can't sleep any longer than that unless it's right after a race or a really brutal workout.
Ah, for the days I could not sleep for a week, take a nap, and be fine. Even not so long ago I could manage on 2 hours after drinking all night and be fresh as a daisy. Darn healthy lifestyle has pretty much killed my chances of an unhealthy lifestyle :-)

I have read a few people touch on this already, but how much sleep is everyone getting? Do you augment your sleep depending on the type of training you do? (Ie, harder training = more sleep?) I typically work from 7am - 6pm, spend at least an hour or two in the gym and cook my own meals each day, therefore aside from my running/tri training, I get about 5-6 hours of sleep each night. Of course it's 'dead-to-the-world-I-biked-60-miles' today sleep but still... Are you guys magically averaging 12 hours out there?
