Bike shorts for the whole race

So, I have my first race of the year coming up on Saturday, and I'm wondering what to do about shorts. In the past, I have just worn under armor underneath my bike shorts on the bike leg, and then taken them off and put on basketball shorts for the run. I'd rather just wear my bike shorts for the whole race, but I'm wondering if they'll get too soggy and cause me problems on the bike/run.

For reference, I have Voler bike shorts (the hammer nutrition ones). They don't have a super thick pad, but it's not as thin as tri shorts. Has anyone ever raced in normal bike shorts, and did you have to do anything special to prevent sogginess, or does it just kind of dry out quickly on the bike? Also, does it cause any kind of weird problems on the run? I've run in my bike shorts for practice, but they weren't wet. Anyways, thanks for any replies.

How long is the race?

Wear them for the whole race. Yes, they get wet in the water, dry out some on the bike but if it's warm and you're dumping water on yourself during the run, you'll be soaked from water and sweat anyway.
I've worn bike shorts for my IM's, no problem...wear them at all my tri's actually...for me it feels better for the "boys." Just make sure you body glide well.
Just wearing the shorts, you won't be fussing with clothes in the TA's...time saver. And this is how you learn. You'll either come out of this race saying "That worked great!' or "Yikes, I'll never do THAT again!"
Besides...You'll look snappy!

IF you've run in them before and feel comfortable doing then stick with it. I use bike shorts all the time for training rides, but they just really bother me to run in them. So for races I switch to tri shorts. But if you can run in them, and I'd try it before the race, then go for it.

+1 to the uncomfortable feeling with running in them for me. However, I have switched to only training in tri-shorts so I don't get used to the padding of the bike shorts on training rides. That and the fact that I don't have a pair of good bike shorts.

But yeah, if you've run in them and it doesn't bother you...go for it

For me I wear tri shorts on the swim and throw on some bike shorts for the bike if the race is anything up to or longer than a HIM.

With the race tomorrow - I wouldn't do anything really different with what you wear than what you have been training in. Good chance to discover that running in wet bike shorts causes chaffing or is just uncomfortable. Or it could be just fine.

Nothing new on race day.

Sorry, it's a sprint race.

Yeah, now I'm even more confused than before. Keep the thoughts coming. Also, this is a B race for this year. My A race is coming up in 5 weeks.

Just curious - what don't you like about racing in tri-shorts?

The fact that I don't own any. I would love some tri shorts, but my wife is pregnant with our first baby (due in 3 weeks right between my 2 tris this year), so I'm trying to limit all the money going to other hobbies and stuff.

If anyone out there is looking to donate some XL/XXL tri shorts (sounds kind of contradictory), then I'd be happy to take them off your hands.

If it's your B-race, and only a sprint, I would say, try out doing it all in biking shorts. A sprint isn't that long, so even if it's really uncomfortable you'll survive, and then you'll know more for your A-race in 5 weeks. Normally I do agree with nothing new on race day, but as this isn't that important for you, it's a good chance of trying it out before your A-race.

Good-luck

Yup. Slammy's right...just a sprint...wear the bike shorts. A good time to learn. Sure, you wouldn't want to go to an IM never having done it, but I contend that just going for a run in them won't cut it if you want to get a sense of feel. It might, but take a shower in them first then ride for awhile then get off and start running and dump fluid all over yourself in the process. Then, you might know if it works in a race. better yet...wear them to the sprint! Sometimes you have to try stuff in "C" or "B" races to see if it will work in a "A". It's where I've made my biggest mistakes and learned my biggest lessons.
Have a great time Chunky and let us know how it goes...
And as I said earlier...body glide is your friend!

To me B and C races are for testing for the A races. I try the "new" stuff (ie not raced with) and learn from them.

Have worn sugoi cycling shorts the whole race - swim then bike then run - on 70.3 and 140.6. No problems. Drying out is a relative term b/c they just get all sweated-up later anyways.

+1 on Sugoi shorts. I just got a pair & they are my new favorite. The pad isn't too thick, either.

Trishorts are like frosted flakes... They'rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre great! Ride to work for a week and spend the gas savings on a pair.

As an aside, I saw a guy do the run still wearing his bib shorts from the ride. No shirt, as if he were wearing a trisuit. He looked riddiculous. Don't be that guy

Personally I love tri shorts for everything. Since triathlons aren't my focus I just got one pair to feel the part before my first sprint but after a training run or two I took to wearing them for all runs. I find that the cycling pad really gives me a home and doesn't chafe like mess running shorts can (trying to avoid TMI) Plus they aren't as stiff for my running motion as true cycling shorts.

The only thing for me is that I've learned that different brands and price points make a huge difference. I have a $40 pair of tri shorts that are very loose in the groin but tight in the legs and waist which are good for cycling but not all the motion in distance running (again... avoiding TMI). I have since made the commitment and bought a $70 pair of 2XU's that are very snug all around and I just love them.

In terms of spending the money, I find that I can just buy one pair and I'll wear them into the shower post workout to 'clean' them and then just ring them out and leave them to dry for the next day. That way I get a lot out of each pair and don't have to alternate with multiples. I just have to make sure I try them fully to avoid 'nasty shorts syndrome'

Whenever I do a brick, I run in my cycling clothes and it feels great. Actually, I feel better running in cycling shorts than I do in running shorts, and they do get wet from the sweating anyway.

Don't worry about the sogginess, you will not have a problem, since the fabric is very close to the one used for swimming suits.

Do get a swim in them before your race, just to experience what it will feel like.

stick with bike shorts the whole race. they'll get damp, but never soggy (in my experience). tri shorts are better than full bike shorts, but the difference is not too dramatic.

I always race in my bike shorts. Granted I am a short course guy (Sprint and Olympic) so not sure how that would go for longer distances. Just test them out to make sure they don't hold too much water or you'd be running in a diaper. Go with a thin pad bike short and you should be good. So, that post reminded me that I never followed up. I raced in my bike shorts, and it couldn't have gone better. I didn't even have the normal level of chafing that I usually get on the run, so that was awesome. And, yes, it was nice to have that extra little protection in case I had an accident out on the course.

You can always say you had a gel that burst in your shorts!!

If you are looking for tri shorts on the cheap check the online stores and look in the clearance sections for last years models. They have limited sizing and that usually means lost of XS and XL, and XXL sizes. I got several pair a few years ago (mediums, I lucked out) for under $20 a pair and I got free shipping.

I'm sorry, I have to say it... Anton has always had this philosophical way about him. And now with his new picture, he really reminds me of Yoda.
