Need Recommendation for Fast Healing

On Saturday I had a bad mtb crash involving an idiot, sand, and a failed attempt to dodge a flying bike on a downhill. I now have a 4" gash on the inside of my thigh with a deep hole at one end where a piece of plastic was lodged in my skin. Stiches probably would have been a good idea but it's too late for that now. I need this closed/healed up by this coming weekend for my race.

Does anyone have recommendations for fast healing and perhaps an ointment that's far superior to Neosporin?

Holy crap... ouch!!!!!!

Why are stitches out now? Me thinks you can get stitches any time. That seems like the best idea.

I'm not a doctor, nurse, or emt.

Kerry's Miracle Salve Plus is the best stuff I know of:

And be sure to be getting plenty of Vitamin C. And I would probably take some arnica as well. Keep a close eye on the puncture wound too, those are notorious for infections.

Best of luck!

Drink some booze, and sear it with a red-hot iron rod... Cowboy style.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

My girlfriend is a nurse in the emergency department of the local hospital. I cut my finger working around the house a couple of weeks ago and she fixed me right up with something called dermabond. Kind of like superglue for skin. If you know anyone that would have access to it, they might be able to help you out, otherwise ask your doctor. Hopefully you'll be all closed up cuz I think healing is out of the question in a week. Good luck.

FYI: I heard from a friend that is (or use to be) an EMT and he said that stitches usually need to be done within 6hrs of the incident.

I'll second that one! :) Make sure to get some antibiotics too...It would be very nasty to get infected, since you had some plastic sticking out and all.

Personally I can't believe you're not going to get this looked at, unless it's not as bad as you describe, but whatever.

I'd bet on the dermabond.... and a piece of duct tape for good measure...

I'm not one to go running to the doctor for every scrape I get.
I've had other incidents (mostly with forearms) and managed to take care of them myself, so I guess I'm inclined do the same and avoid extra costs.

I also don't like my doctor very much, he's given me the runaround in the past and I think he's a rip off. If I had a good reliable one I'd probably see one.

I have a little advice for you... Find a doc you trust. Makes getting better easier.

Infection is the biggest concern. We did a group ride a month ago and during a crash, someone got a puncture wound that did not seem too big a deal and wound up being life-threatening within 24 hours. Not trying to freak you out but if it truly is a puncture wound, I second the sentiment that I would get it checked out. Scrapes are really not a big deal, it's the puncture that can be a problem. Good luck.

This thread is useless without pictures.

Honestly, though, find a doctor. That sounds pretty nasty, and it sounds like it will get infected before too long.

Oh Chunky, you just want to see the inside of some guys thigh with a four inch gash and a puncture wound! If you haven't seen that kind of thing by now you've lived a pretty sheltered life! ;)

Well, I do live in Utah and go to BYU, so I guess it doesn't get much more sheltered than that. ;)

I have lots of pictures of things much worse than this in my special effects makeup folder... Want to see some burn victims?

A puncture wound can be nasty especially since you may have damaged something deep....nicked a large vein or artery or tore muscle fibers...that kind of thing. In the gash, how far down could you see? Into the muscle? You'll just keep ripping it open if you continue to ride on it and it wont heal. Later on you'll develop a big Keloid scar that will interfere with how things work and will require surgery. It's never too late for stitches...they just cut new edges to the gash then sew it up. (oops, had to edit, spelled keloid wrong and we must have accurate medical info!)
No race this weekend is so important that you can't get yourself fixed...If it's as bad as you say, and if you don't get it taken care of, this will come back to haunt you.

actually, as a physician, i can say that the reason why we generally would not want to suture old wounds is the danger of sewing bacteria or foreign objects into the wound, plus the fact that healing would already have started. it is not only cutting new edges, but if the wound is deep it will be healing inside, as well . . . in general, i would recommend that people wait until wounds are healed until swimming, because even the cleanest pool water still has plenty of nasty bacteria in it . . .

also, just for the information of people on the board, plain soap and water is the best for cleansing out wounds. neosporin or bacitracin promote resistant bacteria, and hydrogen peroxide actually inhibits wound healing . . .

just my 2 cents.

Yeah, well, call me a 'wuss' fellow triathletes and endurance survivors, but if I ever injure myself in a manner that I would describe as ' a 4" gash' in which a 'piece of plastic was lodged...' I would be getting myself to a certified medical professional as soon as possible. I mean, personally I prefer my gashes to be non-existent and my plastics to be of the non-lodged kind.

But seriously, Swimming, I would use common logic. If the wound begins to look red or feel overly hot to the touch, get thee to a doctor. Otherwise, just make sure you keep it clean and dry. As a parting thought, if you really got anything imbedded and it was sizable, I wouldn't go swimming anytime soon, especially not in open water. I'm not a doctor, but I know enough flesh eating bacteria to want to go farrrrr out of my way to make sure I'm not on the menu. Maybe stick to the duathlon?

Ditto all on find a doctor. Yeesh!

As for the Dermabond, my son had it for a cut on the head and it was great. Lasted for about a week I'd say. It was a lovely translucent purple, which was both highly stylish and practical, as we could see the cut healing underneath.

The Dermabond would be great for the swim and the prevention of oogy infections.

Rahm Emanuel (congressman - also a triathlete accordingly to Wikipedia) is **missing part of a finger** because he went swimming in a lake after getting a cut. Surely an intact thigh is a thing you value?

Good luck!

I would have gone to the doctor initially but since that is past keep and eye on it for infection.
Try dermabond and put a bit of duct tape on it.
