I completed my first tri on a hybrid...which I still have. Obviously not the fastest bike split in the world but it got me into the sport in an inexpensive way.
I would not advocate trying to use a hybrid as a training bike if you have a roadie/tri specific to race on...the body position on each is completely different, among other things. However, if it's a racing option for you, then heck yea train on it. Unfortunately my hybrid has been collecting dust, but I'm planning on using it for communting once I find a home a little closer to work.
As far as changing out handlebars...there are many different hybrids and I'm not sure the ones with straight handlebars have the correct geometry to make bullhorns very effective since they put you in a much more upright position (although I'm no expert on hybrids). I would just stick with what you got...I mean it is free, can't get a better deal than that

I say you don't want to switch out the handle bars. That can get expensive but quick, what with all the re-wiring, etc. I was on a hybrid last year for the same reason as you. But I found a great road bike at my LBS within a few months that was the perfect fit and only set me back $180, inc. the brand new tires and a tune-up. Stick with what you have until you have the itch to upgrade to a new(er) ride.

I'm going to "inherit" a Fuji Hybrid. It is a relatively inexpensive model, but none the less – free for me. Apparently it has straight handlebars. Should I plan on getting different handlebars - better built for speed? If so, can you suggest where/what kind to get - I don't want to spend more on the bars than the bike is worth. Thanks again.
Anyone ever used a Hybrid to train with?
