2 Minute Penalty at Mooseman
could be a ton of things. does even say what portion of the race it was for?
no it just says Penalty after my run portion. I did sprint past a few people at the end; not sure if that is a problem, shouldn't be. I didn't draft anyone.
Strange.
-M
Yeah no i mean during the run. I didn't sprint by anyone on the bike transition to my knowledge. I dismounted when they asked; kind of strange.
-M
What did the penalty sheet say that they post at the race? That always has a description at the races I have done.
A penalty during/after the run is pretty strange unless you outright tackled someone to beat them to the finish line, good move, but might be against the rules. Any gels or anything fall out, maybe you littered?
Let us know what you find out

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
I find most races have the penalty column at the end of the results, and that is is not about when the penalty was assessed. So yeah, ask the race staff.
there is only one column for penalties so it could still be a bike thing:

possibly blocking, crossing double yellow, or even drafting. any chance you were wearing headphones on the run or bike?
no real way to know for sure check RD or if possible the ref
Kinda strange since I never got one; didn't litter, wouldn't use a ipod. I guess I will just wait for an explaination.
Umm.. So is using an Ipod a penalty? I've never heard that before. Maybe I'm just a newb and didn't know.
cheese0614; yeah using any music device during s/b/r is a penalty.

It depends on the race, but I think that any USAT sanctioned event probably forbids it. I have done one triathlon that allowed headphones though. It was one of the backwards ones around thanksgiving, with the swim at the end in a pool. Needless to say, this is not the norm.

At most races... some do allow them, but not many.
Wow... I really never knew that. Ok, well I guess I should start training without one then so its not such a change on race day.

This is USAT rules.

But not all triathlons are USAT sanctioned/supported/whatever.

Oh I didn't know that; I guess I just never did one that wasn't. Makes sense to me now.

I have done a few lin-mark races and they have some very watchful officials especially on the bike.
As far as the iPod/mp3/headphones etc, most road races (running, biking, du or tri) don't allow them because of insurance reasons.
It prevents you from being fully perceptive of the race course, other participants, officials and any hazards.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Yeah, IMO, all races should forbid them, especially races where the roads aren't completely closed for the bike/run. The one race I did that allowed them didn't close the roads at all. Sounds kind of scary, but it was actually a really fun race. But I certainly didn't wear headphones, and I didn't see very many people who did.

Could be anything. At USAT sanctioned races, when they post results at the venue before awards...they usually also post a penalty sheet. Lin-mark does it, but it's one of those things you have to know about to go check. If it's nothing obvious...what about the inobvious: Chin strap fastened when you got on the bike? Did you unfasten it early? In T2, did you rack your bike properly? Can you say, with certainty, that you didn't get pinged for drafting? It only takes a second. Did you get pinged for not riding as far to the right as possible? (my personal pet peeve.)
Hopefully you'll get an answer...let us know!
Oh...having RDed and been a running club VP...It's the Insurance carrier for the club or sponsoring entity that demands the safety riders whether they are unsafe or not...like no head phones. The Insurance companies have had to pay huge sums of money in law suits over breeches of race safety. Since most clubs get insurance under the umbrella of, say, USAT or RRCA...those entities call the shots and say NO headphones etc.

You can get a penalty if you use too much space in transition. At Spirit of Racine, officials walk through transition and warn people regarding taking too much room. Even if the space next to them is not occupied. Then go through again during the swim and assess penalties.

Oh I meant that when I looked at my times the last column said penalty and it said 2 minutes. My fault.

So when you find out will you let us all know? The suspense is killing me!

My votes would be:
1) Drafting
2) Littering
3) Being too damn good looking
Just a guess since I have never been penalized for any of them.
I know image being penalty for eating the meat burger instead of the veggie burger?
The suspense is killing me too; 2 days and no response from the RD or the Website.
1) Drafting; I don't think so since people pass me like I am standing still on the bike
2) I just don't litter (My mom taught me well)
3) I know that's not it....
I think it is because of the bike re-racking. I will let you know.

"You were penalized for a violation of rule 5.10(a), illegal positioning...aka drafting.
You followed the cyclist in front of you less than 1 bike length for 21 seconds and did not pass.
The bicycle you were riding was a grey Specialized and you were wearing a grey shirt.
I hope this answers your question"
This is hiliarious we were riding up hill and I couldn't pass him because he kept speeding up. I guess they are serious at Mooseman.
-Mat
That is hilarious. As I was climbing devils hill I was in a similar situation. I actually said out loud. "If we are going less than 8mph is it still considered drafting?". Nobody responded. I do feel people were passing beyond the double yellow lines on that hill tho'.
Anyhow,
I guess you've answered my question.
Sorry man.
ChunkyB
Imagine if I did that; hilarious....

I wish they would take a serious stance at EVERY race. That way people would be less inclined to draft on purpose.
Even though it was not intentional on your part, and you probably weren't even thinking about drafting, you could have moved to one side or the other to get out of the draft zone, or made a passing move. If you get your wheel in front of his, he has to drop out of YOUR draft zone.
fpugsley-
Yeah I guess your right; but it was only for a few seconds. Anyways now I know better but man that was one hilly course last thing I wanted to do was hit the breaks...
Dude, i wouldn't have slowed down either.

I emailed the director to see what this penalty was for. Any idea's? Or could it be a ton of things?
