2 part question: chicago bike purchase /nutrition
I can't answer your question about the bike, but I can for the nutrition piece.
Usually now most nutrition labels will list under the carbs: fiber; sugar; and other carbs. So your guess is pretty accurate for what it is made of. Usually enriched flous (ie, white, refined flour). It it is a whole grain product than it might be whatever they put in it (whole wheat flour, wheat germ, etc). The best way to know this is to look at the ingredients. The first 3 ingredients are going to be mostly what the food is made of. And no, you do not add the 20 + 25 g of carbs. The total carbs is the total, and then it is broken down underneath. Hopefully that makes sense. I teach this all day long to people but it is difficult to explain it in writing without looking at the nutrition label.

For 500-600 you wouldn't get a mountain bike that would be worth racing unless you picked it up on ebay. Just remember to get a relatively small frame when compared to a roadie. And I wouldn't recommend a cyclocross bike for xterra racing, as many courses are too rough and you'd want at least a front suspension.
I just moved to Chicago mysef and am having a lot of trouble finding good training spots within the city. The North Branch Trail in the forest preserve is decent, and somewhat fun to roll on a winding path through trees. You can get in a couple miles at a time unmolested by motorists. Pick it up at 6400N and 6400W and head north to Lake/Cook county line (about 14 miles on the path) and you can ride some smoother roads. A lot of cyclists will recommend Sheridan Road to head north out of the city, but unless you have the cyclocross bike, I recommend steering clear.

i was i wanting to get a few opinions on what people can offer as far suggestions on which bike i should look into getting? My problem is i come from a road background and very much love and miss the sport of riding my road bike but due to my job transfer to north chicago area, with the massive potholes everywhere and huge traffic concerns there seems to be no where to cycle out on the open road without having to drive 30-40mins. There is a ton of bike paths here theyre just not ideal for road bike training and triathlon trianing where you can just get down and go for miles on end at 20+mph, which is a real stinker as i also dont want to give up my triathlon hobby.
so ive decided to purchase a mountain bike or cross bike or perhaps place some cross wheels/tires on the road bike? to just ride these "commuter bike" trails and give off road tri a shot or dip into the posrt of clyocross maybe? i was wondering if you could only get one bike and had about a 5-600$ budget to spend on another bike should i get a mountain bike, cylcobike? or put cross tires/rims on the road bike? and use it as my off road bike? any suggestions is greatly appreciated!!!
Nutrition question: when a package suggest's that it has 25carbs on the food label and when you look farther down the label lists:"other carbs 20G" what exactly makes up this "other carbs" sugar? enriched flour? and does that play a role in total carb intake? 25+20=45carb per serving now or still 25carb?
thank you for your time once again folks and take care, have fun out there and be safe.
