flexibility help, very tight in hips
I do hot (Bikram and Power) yoga about 5x a week and totally feel a difference. The first few times I too was sore, but that will pass. I love it. There are at least 3 other IM triathletes in the class along with others that do shorter tri's and run as well. Cannot be all that bad :)
I'd be interested to hear other alteratives for loosening up the hips too. I'm 23 like OP, and as of late I've had slight soreness and stiffness in my hip joints. It's the first time I'm experiencing any kind of feeling in my hips, primarily when I wake up. I don't know if this is from 8 years of high school and college rowing, which is a seated sport that pivots from your hips or just a sign of "aging" (scary) from over-use over the years.
I don't have time during the week to fit in multiple yoga sessions. Need something I can do for 15-20 min at the gym or prior to hitting the road.
I have had the same problem. I am 23 as well and I played baseball growing up. I understand the tightness in the lower body area. I got a foam rolling pad from a physical therapist and over the course of a few weeks I really loosened up. It really helped in the IT band area. I felt more power on the bike almost immediately and it has made long rides much more enjoyable.
I've used foam rolling pads to stretch my shoulders and rotator cuff's. What do you do on them for your hips?
For my hips I lie on my back and pull my leg (bent at the knee) across my body (like so that I could almost put that foot on the ground beside the opposite hip). I move it around with my hands to places where I feel it being tight and hold in the tight spots. The main thing is slow and gentle. I also do the Chi Running "looseners," which aren't stretches per se but can help with limberness. The main ones that help with hips are these ones where you move your knees in circles in opposite directions (I feel like this loosens right in the hip joint) and the ones where you basically do a slow "belly dance" moving your pelvis in circles. They're both kind of hard to explain, but you could stop at a library and have a look at the description in the book. Or there's probably a youtube of someone doing it out there.
The church where we frequently park for bike rides had this on their sign last weekend: "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape."
im 23 and feel as if im 63 before warming up.
I'm 23 like OP
I am 23 as well
It must just be something about the age 23...I just turned it less than 2 months ago...not looking forward to this upcoming stiffness, lol.
My blog: http://jsktri.blogspot.com
i did just get something from aarp in the mail the other day. Maybe i should speed up my retirement plan and start golfing and get a house in a warm climate. I would explain more but my arthritis is flaring up and it is getting hard to type.
try going to a chiropractor who will stretch you out. i use one and it helps a lot.
+1 Yoga
+1 Foam Roller
It doesn't get any easier as you get older. I turned 30 this year and it was the first year I actually felt my age or noticed a difference.
I'm not trying to say 30 is old but that it's the first time I noticed the difference between ages. Now I HAVE to stretch after workouts instead of knowing that I should but not bothering.
I used IT bands w/ different stretches when I was in college for soccer and track. I'll have to remember what we did but for hurdles it was awesome. I'm horrible w/ streching now which I reaaaalllllyyy need to take in consideration. Def. it is not like how it used to be and it's been only about 3 years since I've been out of college. (lol)
You can buy those bands I would think at sport stores/whatever is near you. I bet you could too look up/search stretches for it. I took a band from college so I got the "hookup". It worked for me alot so there is my POV. =)

hello all
just quick question any and all suggestions are welcomed. I was wondering what seems to work for everybody on the topic of flexibility in the lower body? my hips and hammy's are always very tight and stiff, im 23 and feel as if im 63 before warming up. i do the tradional static stretching holds of all the basic's quads and hams and calves but nothing seems to work. ive done the karaoke stretches and still nothing hips the hip flexors or hammy's. ive also taken up yoga granted only have done it a few times but felt even more stiff and sore after wards.. and i take it thats def not suppose to happen. tried the sauna and steam rooms as well. no hot tubs.
any suggestions? should i keep to the yoga as i just purchased a DVD on yoga for athletes or is static stretching the way to go?
thank you for your time and good luck at there training and most importantly have fun, enjoy it.
