Foot Pain

I have had this pain on the top of my foot in the middle and I havent figured out what the cause of it might be yet. It started occuring about a month ago and has been cropping up each time I run. I have given it a solid week off last week and then went running over the weekend and the pain came back again.

Some background info on me:
6'3" 197lbs
Average pace on 4-7 mile run=6:25 to 6:40 min/mile.
Run on outside of foot (supination).
New shoes in Early march but no problems to begin with and even changed back to old shoes for a little while w/o pain.
Hurts when I point my toes out.
Tried loosening shoes with no reduction in pain.

Can anyone tell me what to do or change to make the pain go away? Its not the pain that bothers me, its the idea that it could get worse and be something more serious.

See a doctor..Im working with a PT right now with problems in my foot and the first thought was a Stress Fracture. Thought being that the pain would increase as I ran and the fracture would let blood in and begin to hurt as more blood got into the bone. If youve already given it time off then you need to see a doc of some kind. Just my .02

You really need to see a podiatrist if it does not clear up.
I went through an issue like this last year and ended up having a broken foot.

I shouldn't have waited 3 weeks to go to the doctor.

I will echo the other guys. Go see a doctor, preferably a podiatrist. Sounds like some symptoms of Plantar Fasciatis, but of course I could be wrong. I had some issues similiar to this, saw a doctor, told me not to run for 4 weeks or so, I didnt run for about 2 weeks and the issue went away.

Thank you for your opinions. I will have to check into seeing a doctor in the near future, but for now, until i can get into the doctor, i guess ill just stay off the running and ice it a few times a day. I suppose this leaves more time for swimming and cycling then...Good thing we have options!

this probably is not too much help, but i had a similar situation a couple of months ago. it was due to a new pair of shoes and once i exchanged them for a different pair the pain went away. i think that seeing a doctor would be a good idea because you dont want to be messing around with stress fractures, etc. good luck.

It could be Morton's Neuroma, an inflamation of the nerve that runs between the third and fourth metatrasals. The cures are rest, anti-inflammatories, ortho arch supports and/or a cortisone shot. Why it suddenly flairs up - who knows... I've been running 30+ years and never dealt with it until 2 years ago. But everyone is correct about in getting in to see a podiatrist as soon as possible. The sooner you see one the sooner the problem will be fixed.

The thing is, it could be so many things. You say it hurts when you point your toes out... you mean point them out, rotating like a clock?

Maybe if you can help localize the pain, another poster can be of more assistance:

Go see several podiatrists. 2/3 doctors aren't able to say much more than, "get some rest, stop doing what you're doing, take these pills".

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

I saw my doctor 4 weeks ago because my foot was hurting. He pushed on my toe and pressed a few places, and nothing hurt, so he said it wasn't broken. Then he pulled my toe away from my foot and down, and I almost came out of my chair. He said the muscle between my toes is bruised.

He didn't fix it, but he did give me peace of mind. I don't understand when to ice things and when to put heat on them, but he said to use heat and take an over the counter drug to reduce swelling, and I should be fine. He also suggested that I don't run on it for a week. I asked about the marathon 10 or 11 days later, and he told me it would be fine by then. If nothing else, the doc will give you peace of mind.

I have not run since last week saturday, so about 9 days now and the pain has not subsided even though i been icing it 3x a day at work for 12 minutes a period. I was hauling stuff in and out of my house, up and down 30+ stairs about 15 times and by the end of it my foot hurt on a scale of 1-10 about a 7. Bearable, but pretty uncomfortable and really didnt make me want to walk a whole lot.
To respond to theShiba, what I mean by pointing out is just pointing your toes straight out as to make your toes and foot and ankle in one line. No turning or rotating, just pointing. And that doesnt even hurt that badly today. The picture i have attached shows a line where the pain is located in my foot. It runs about 20 degrees down off perpendicular to my foot in the Cuneiforms region.
I have an appt with a chiropractor/homeopathic doctor on saturday that has never let me down even with the weirdest of ailments. Until then, more ice and staying off the road and in the pool and on the pedals.

UPDATE:

I went to see the homeopathic chiropractor and he confirmed that I may indeed have a stress fracture in my right foot. He said to contrast bath and ice as often as possible and try to stay off it. Since I am already signed up for a few races I have to keep training somehow.

Does anyone know of any running pool workouts I could do as well as strength workouts to keep my running abilities from dropping? Until this thing heals, I dont want to run on pavement or grass unless its necessary.
