Western States 100
Lots can happen in ultras...as I'm sure you've read over on the Ultra thread. Don't pin your qualifying hopes on one race...have a back up 50 in case your planned one doesn't go well.

I actually have 2 im planning on doing, the one in October is the planned one to qualify in under 9 hours but I am also doing a race in March that is a little more challenging but I know the course well, and it's a 10 mile loop so if October doesn't pan out then I can shoot to qualify in March.
But I also figure, If I can't qualify I have no business being in the western states 100.

For 2009 WS-100 will no longer use the 3 strikes rule which automatically granted entry to anyone who had lost the lottery 3 times. That should help your chances. On the other hand, more and more people enter the drawing every year. So if 2000 enter your chances are a little less than 20% to get in.
There is also a raffle you can enter

Mostly you need a qualifying race and some luck. So good luck!

Wow its less than 20%, I really thought it was a lot higher than that. I guess WS has really caught on in the past few years. Oh well, I'll just cross my fingers and keep registering year after year until I get my chance. Thanks for the well wishing!

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
i just looked at leadville and whew, I was ready to spend a small amount of time in the clouds but a whole 100 up there?!?! that may be more than my sealevel body could take.
However, it sounds very intriguing and I'm going to have to look into if I miss the lottery.
Thanks!

I'm with you Cayman...WS is not the be all and the end all, but it's the one that gets all the press.
Many other classic 100's...Leadville, Vermont, Massanutten, Old Dominion, the list goes on ...and without waiting lists...

WS is intriguing to me in the same sense that the corporate IM's are. Just one of the things on the checklist.
Looking the the Leadville page I think that race would be awesome if I could figure out how to handle that elevation.....

Ok to all my ultra people I have a big question to anyone who has done, attempted or heard about the western states 100.
I am in the lottery for 2009, and since that is the only way in (not to mention qualifying, volunteer hours, or surviving in general) and I was wondering what my chances are of actually getting a spot. My qualifying run is the North Face Endurace 50 in Madison in October this year, but I am guessing my chances of getting selected are slim. Any insight into the race is great, I am so amazed and intrigued by the mystery of this thing and want every part of it!
