Heavy training and increased RHR
This might just be me...but I wouldn't worry too much about the RHR. Your body is generally more fatigued from the higher volume, and should right itself during your rest week.
Now, if you start to feel weaker, or your training is suffering or you're just generally tired a lot, then I'd say take a day off
It's very normal and I'd slot in an extra rest day. Usually I'm up the two or three days before a rest week, but not a week and a half...may be an indication you need a few active recovery or additional rest days...

I'd be more concerned if your RHR was 10 beats higher. That's when I'll raise a red flag.
But like jsk85 said, if you feel weak or have very low motivation then you should probably give yourself a little more rest.

Thanks for the comments guys; I'm not feeling weak or lacking motivation yet (though sometimes setting out on that long bike ride at 0degrees is enough to make me think I need a rest day:) ) but sense I am pushing my body a bit more than I have for some time, I might try and throw in an extra recovery day early next week as well as one Saturday...cheers
I'd be more concerned if your RHR was 10 beats higher.
You can get an extra 4-5 bpm just by rolling over or picking your head up prior to taking your RHR. If it were consistently elevated by 10+ then I may be inclined to scale back for an extra day or two. As long as you feel fine, I say proceed as normal.

Hi all,
I'm into week 2 of 3 heaviest training weeks - high volume before I have a recovery week and taper into my first HIM. Noticed the last few days my RHR in the morning is up around 4-5 beatshigher than normal. Is this usual at this part of training? My impression is that this stage of the training year it's a fine line between loading up the body and overtraining...
A month or more ago I would maybe have taken an extra rest day (I have one/week) but apart from the RHR and my body feeling like it is being loaded up, I'm not feeling any other effects of heavy training...SO, is this ok to put up with a raised RHR for the last 1.5weeks of heavy training before a recovery week? Or should I insert one extra rest day if possible (It's a stretch with my work schedule)...cheers!
