Vacation at altitude, 3 weeks before half-IM
Family first, but train as much as you can.
I think you'll be fine. By that time in your training you will have done the bulk of the work to prepare for the race. By the time you are two weeks out you are likely to be cutting back on workouts, and focusing on resting.
You probably know that some things that you might experience at that altitude include headache, faster dehydration, and general feelings of fatigue. Some people also feel queasiness and nausea. As tri-ac suggests you may find that you need to cut your planned workouts back depending on how you feel. Do what you can, but don't stress if they feel like a slog-fest. Really listen to your body and don't push yourself during the trip. Stay hydrated, stay away from alcohol (its effects at altitude can be harsh on flatlanders and it can exacerbate other altitude impacts), keep your nutrition in line, and get plenty of sleep, but also be active with your family. That is a great time to be out here in the CO mountains!

Hey all-
As you may or may not know, I'm training for the Pigman Half-IM, my first half-IM, which is on August 17th. I just got a internship for the summer which will end in time for me to go on vacation with my family at the end of July. However, we're headed to see my uncle in Leadville, CO, altitude 10,200 ft. Do you think it is feasible at all to do the training necessary that week at such an altitude? Or, would it be better to stay home and get in a solid week of training?
Thanks
Greg
