How long should bike shoes last?

I got a WICKED hot spot yesterday on my ride (40 miles, mountains) that still hurts this morning. Got me thinking I really need to go for some new shoes.

But how long are bike shoes "supposed" to last? Mine are about 3 years old, at a solid 1000mi/yr.

I'm on a bit of an upgrade rampage getting ready for next weekend's HIM, but I'm really trying to restrain myself...

i'm not going to tell you not to get new stuff, but 1 week before a race?
if this is a first time hotspot on 3yo shoes, i'd say throw some body glide in there, or just get new foam footbeds for now.

Been a recurring problem pretty much since I've had the shoes. I probably should have done something before now, but now I'm thinking that if this were to happen in the race, I literally wouldn't have been able to leave T2.

what were you waiting for? get some shoes! just spend some time in them to be sure they're not going to bring any new problems before racing in them

one thing my lbs did when i got my shoes was to double up on the footbeds (not any custom footbeds, just the cheapie flat ones that come in shoes) to bolster the limited cushioning in the shoe
