Advice on Getting Back to on the Run
When I was raising a daughter I took about 8 years off of competition and hard workouts...put all that time into family. Ran when I could, biked once in awhile and lifted regularly...It took awhile to get back at it, but not too long.
That being said...you have to build fitness and a general base. I think the best way to do that is to run for time, and go how you feel. Nothing fancy...just running. Keep it simple. Save the HRM for a specific program. Good idea to get a year under your belt before you tackle a specific goal. Given your time line 2010 would be a great for a half mary or HIM. Taking your time to get back will help keep injuries and burnout at bay. Too many folks rush back too fast then disappear again having done too much too soon.

welcome to Trifuel! and welcome back to being active!
go by time and increase your volume by 10% max each week with a recovery week every month
i'd also give yourself a goal or two to get you through the year...maybe a 5k or 10k or a sprint tri? i find it's much easier to get my workouts in when there's a set goal

Hello all, I am a former Sprint Distance Triathlete who took a three year break and am now returning to the sport. I need to know some do's and dont's about getting back into the run.
About me, I (33yrs old) have always trained with a HR monitor and have been spinning for about six weeks in zone 2 to just get the old heart pumping again and the legs limber ... once a week I will go up to a z4 for 10 mins or so, just for the good feelings.
Any general advice from previous experience will be greatly appreciated and I would like to ask specifically, an idea of a starting point. Do I run mileage or heartrate, if so how much or what zone? And how often?
I have about 8-11 hours per week that I can give to exercise, but my ambitions are mild. This year, no races planned, I just want to get back into gear; but in the longterm, I would like to do a marathon or a half ironman in the summer of 2010. Thanks!
