So i am a first timer let me give you a little background before i pose my question. I have been training for my first race in June and am feeling really strong. I was supposed to do a Oly but i am wondering if i could do a HIM instead. I am a strong cyclist i can already ride 100 miles without stopping for more than maybe a clif bar as i was training for a double century in Aug. I am sure i can swim the distance and make the run but not crazy fast. My training is strong i do a long run of about 10-15 miles once a week. It is march 9th the race is in 17 weeks do you think i am nuts to make a HIM my first race. I am open to all comments seeing as i am just a kid (22) and know my eyes maybe larger than my legs. Thanks for all the help.

We're all a bit nuts on here, so you're in good company.

As for the race, it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. It sounds like you have a good base and should have no problems finishing. If you're hoping to qualify for Florida, you may be a bit wide-eyed, but since it's still 17 weeks out, you have planty of time to prepare and figure out nutrition. You'll probably want more than a single cliff bar.

And I hope you're not insane, as that would mean I am too. This will be my first year of tri racing, training, etc. and I'll be doing Steelhead in August, though with a few Oly's beforehand.

I know folks have made HIMs or even Ironmans their first race, personally I'd suggest doing an olympic or sprint distance first. Basically give you a chance to iron out some of the kinks, know how to set up your transition area, etc... so that you have that many fewer things to be worried or nervous about at your HIM.

Either way, good luck!

I don't think you're crazy for wanting to do a HIM that soon. It sounds like you could probably already finish. I would look for maybe a sprint or oly between now and then to practice those things like transitions and to just get one under your belt.

Certainly doable. Also agree with the suggestions to do a sprint or Oly prior to the HIM. Just to get a good feel for transitions etc. Assume that you are doing brick workouts.

You could definitely finish... just practice nutrition and start figuring that out and you should be fine :)

Even if you can't squeeze a race in, I would just make sure you get at least some open water swims under your belt. If you have not swam in open water yet, the first time can be a little scary and you won't want your first time to be in a race.

Thanks for all the advice i have open water swims coming in may its a little hard living in reno this time of year even with a wet suit. I am going to look for a race in May so i can get some practice. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.
