1) Where is everyone staying?
2) Have you seen the bike course? The elevation profile has 997' of elevation gain. That's not very much for the "Hill Country," no?
3) Any insight into water temp and wetsuits? I'm debating on going without a wetsuit regardless of water temp, just wondered how 'cold' the water could be.
4) Anyone ever swam in that lake before? I'm also debating on going without goggles.
I thought you've done this one, Sooner. I am staying at the Hampton inn North. I am hoping the hills shrink, regardless of if that's wimpy. I've never been to Austin, but my brother's at UT- he said he's never been at that lake before tho, so no help, really.
Staying with friends sooner.
As far as the bike, havent done it personally but heard it is a course you can "sting" as mentioned by someone else on another website so the hills must be no problem.
Nothing like Leakey where I have been training a bit.
Water temp last year was wet suit legal by ONE degree and with this hot summer you may not have a choice of wearing one or not. Lake is small so waves/currents should be also..unless we get one of those late October blue nothers.
Good Luck.
I'm staying at the Hampton Inn North too, so I'll be sure to prank call your room repeatedly. For the "hill country," it seems like a flat course. I'm kinda hoping for no wetsuit, personally. I just don't 'need' one and I've always thought they are a pain to get out of. No one up here has even heard of that lake, so I guess it's nothing special.
I have a feeling that YOUR prank calls could be very entertaining. Looking forward to meeting you.
I have a friend in the Austin area. He said the "hills" on that side of town are more long slow ascents and most of the rollers are probably no more than 20 feet in the process of the long gradual climb. From what he made it sound like, wind could be more of a factor than the elevation change.
You guys are lucky the race is out East of town, the "hill country" is west of town near Lake Austin, having not seen the bike course I will cover my back by saying "you have a 65 miles to get to the west side of town and enjoy some hills" :)
I lived in Austin for a while, but never swam in that lake, but as most things in Texas are.....I'm sure the water will be "warm"
enjoy the race, and enjoy the town, there are so many kick ass places for a good meal!

I am doing this one as well, my first Half Iron, scared to death, since I live south of Houston and there NO hills. If the hills are low and rolling I've done that before and it can be quite painful. As for H2O temp, it will be around 72, rain and a cold front is rolling through the area to day and tomorrow and it willbe in the upper 50's on Sunday am. I am going with a full wetsuit, since I am not a contender for the podium I want to be warm...
The Lake used to called "Decker Lake" and like most lakes in southern TX it will be green brown, but with little wave action. The winds on the bike might be more of a problem....
Anyways, Good Luck everybody, should be great race and a nice day
